No narration audio? Install a Text-to-Speech voice for your language.

RoadWhisper uses your phone's built-in Text-to-Speech engine to read stories out loud. If you picked a language in the app that doesn't have a voice installed on your phone, you simply won't hear anything. Here's how to fix it.

🤖 Android

Most Android phones come with Google's Text-to-Speech engine, but not every language voice is downloaded by default. To install one:

  1. Open Settings on your phone.
  2. Go to System → Languages & input (on some phones this is just under General management).
  3. Tap Text-to-speech output.
  4. Select your speech engine (usually Google Text-to-Speech).
  5. Tap the gear/settings icon next to the engine, then Install voice data.
  6. Find your language in the list and download it.
Exact menu names vary by manufacturer — on Samsung, Xiaomi, and other custom Android skins the path may be worded slightly differently (e.g. Settings → General management → Language and input → Text-to-speech), but the general route is the same: find Text-to-speech settings, open your engine, and install the voice for the missing language.

🍎 iPhone & iPad

iOS usually bundles voices for most supported languages automatically. If a voice is still missing:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Accessibility → Spoken Content.
  3. Tap Voices.
  4. Find your language and tap the download icon next to it.

✅ After installing

Once the voice is downloaded, restart RoadWhisper. The app will automatically use the newly installed voice for the language you selected — no further setup needed.
